Mission

My mission is to foster a human capital revolution through education technology.

I begin with a question: how should I live my life to create the greatest possible impact?

I can make a large impact in a small number of people's lives or a small impact in a large number of people's lives.

Making a large impact in a small number of people's lives requires a lot of individual focus, and that focus relies on the availability of time. And because time is a very limited resource, that makes potential impact very limited as well.

With technology, however, it's possible to build software one time that can scale to millions of people. And as internet access becomes more ubiquitous throughout the developing world, there exist few limitations on the reach of software.

Therefore, if I want to maximize my impact, I should use software to make a small impact in a large number of people's lives. But what should that impact be?

Consider this: most of history has been shaped by surprisingly few people. These superstar scientists, entrepreneurs, and artists impacted the world in an inordinately great way. They were able to do this because of a combination of two things: natural ability and the resources to develop it into something greater.

A bunch of artistically-talented babies didn't just happen to be born in Renaissance Italy. A bunch of talented entrepreneurs didn't just happen to be born in Silicon Valley. Rather, these places always had babies being born with potential for greatness, and the proliferations of talented individuals in these places occurred when resources became available to actualize that potential.

It's likely that a relatively uniform distribution of natural ability exists throughout the world, and what causes the superstar successes we've seen throughout history is the existence of resources to develop that natural ability into something greater. For every Einstein or Carnegie or Shakespeare, therefore, there likely exist thousands of equally talented people who never realized their abilities due to a lack of resources.

What if, however, everyone in the world had access to software that would empower them to explore any idea they found interesting? From math and science to music and art: how many more Einsteins and Carnegies and Shakespeares might exist today if every individual had access to the educational resources necessary to transform her abilities into realities?

For the entirety of human history, only a tiny percentage of people with the ability to change the world had access to the resources necessary to actually do so.

What might the world look like if every individual with the potential to change it... actually did?

Education technology is how that happens. And I've made it my life mission to see that it does.
